Boot & System Speed
1. PC takes over 5 minutes to boot or is extremely sluggish
Windows "Fast Startup" causes background processes to loop instead of shutting down.
- Press Win, type Control Panel.
- Go to Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
- Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Uncheck Turn on fast startup and save changes, then Restart.
2. Task Manager shows Disk or CPU at 100% continuously
The Windows Search Indexer is caught in a loop.
- Press Win, type Services, and press Enter.
- Find SysMain. Right-click > Properties.
- Change Startup type to Disabled, click Stop, and Apply.
3. High Memory usage from "Desktop Window Manager" (dwm.exe)
A memory leak in Intel integrated graphics drivers.
- Press Win + CTRL + SHIFT + B to restart the graphics driver immediately.
- Open Intel Graphics Command Center.
- Go to System > Power and turn Panel Self Refresh to OFF.
4. System freezing completely (requires physical hard reboot)
Corrupted OS files. Run a deployment image scan.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Type:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and hit Enter.
- When finished, type:
sfc /scannow and hit Enter. Reboot.
5. Laptop fan is extremely loud but no heavy apps are open
Background telemetry or a stuck Windows Module Installer.
- Open Task Manager (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC).
- Sort by CPU. If "Windows Modules Installer Worker" is high, let it run (it is processing an update).
- If "System Interrupts" is high, you have a failing hardware driver. Update BIOS/Firmware.
Updates & Software Installation
6. Windows Update stuck downloading at 0% or 99%
The update cache is corrupted. Clear the Software Distribution folder.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Type:
net stop wuauserv and net stop bits.
- Go to
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete all contents.
- Type:
net start wuauserv and retry the update.
7. Stuck in "Undoing changes made to your computer" loop
An update failed to apply and the rollback is hanging.
- Force power off the PC 3 times during the Windows boot logo to trigger Automatic Repair.
- Select Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart > Press 4 for Safe Mode.
- Once in Safe Mode, run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and restart normally.
8. Error 0x80070005 Access Denied during app installation
Your user profile lacks strict administrative rights for the target folder.
- Right-click the installer file (.exe) and select Run as Administrator.
- If it still fails, temporarily disable your Antivirus shield, as it may be blocking the registry write.
9. Microsoft Store apps won't download or update
The Store cache needs a forced hardware reset.
- Close the Microsoft Store.
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
wsreset.exe and press Enter. A blank black window will appear for 10 seconds, then the Store will reopen.
Displays & Audio
10. Second monitor says "No Signal" or isn't detected
Force the graphics driver to handshake with the screen.
- Press Win + CTRL + SHIFT + B.
- If still blank, press Win + P and ensure Extend is selected.
- Unplug the cable from the PC end, wait 5 seconds, and plug it back in.
11. An application window is open, but hidden off-screen
Recover a window lost when disconnecting multi-monitors.
- Click the missing app's icon on your Taskbar.
- Press Alt + Space together, then release.
- Press the M key, then press any Arrow Key once.
- Move your physical mouse—the window is glued to your cursor. Click to drop.
12. Screen resolution is locked, greyed out, or stretched
The OS reverted to the Basic Display Adapter.
- Open Device Manager > expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter > Update driver > Search automatically.
13. Monitor flickering or causing eye strain
Refresh rate mismatch.

A background process is holding the file hostage.
- Press Win + R, type
resmon.
- Go to the CPU tab. In the "Associated Handles" bar, type the exact name of the file.
- Right-click the program that appears and select End Process. Delete the file.
17. C: Drive is full but you can't find large files
Hidden system caches or old update files.
- Open Disk Cleanup as Administrator.
- Check Windows Update Cleanup and Previous Windows installations (Windows.old).
- Click OK. This can free up 10-30GB.
18. Desktop icons and Taskbar disappear entirely
Windows Explorer crashed and failed to restart.
- Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to open Task Manager.
- Click File > Run new task.
- Type
explorer.exe and press Enter to reload the desktop interface.
User Accounts & Security
19. Error: "The User Profile Service failed the logon"
The registry key pointing to your user data is corrupted.
- Hold SHIFT while clicking Restart to enter Safe Mode (Option 4).
- Log in, open
regedit, and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList.
- Look for two folders with the same long name (one ending in
.bak). Rename the bad one to `.old`, and remove `.bak` from the good one. Restart.
20. PIN not working / "Something happened and your PIN isn't available"
The TPM cryptographic cache has desynchronized.
- Log in with your Microsoft/Local password instead using Sign-in options.
- Navigate to
C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Ngc (Requires viewing Hidden Items and Admin approval).
- Delete all contents inside the Ngc folder, then set up a new PIN in Settings.
Group Call Applications
Microsoft Teams
1. Camera feed is black or unresponsive
If your webcam light is on but the screen is black, the Windows video stack may have frozen.
- Click into the Teams window.
- Press CTRL + SHIFT + B simultaneously to force-refresh the camera feed.
- If this fails, check for physical privacy sliders on your laptop bezel blocking the lens.
2. Audio echoing during a call
Echo is almost always caused by a microphone picking up speaker output.
- Immediate fix: Mute yourself when not speaking using CTRL + SHIFT + M.
- Hardware fix: Switch to a headset instead of relying on laptop speakers.
- Software fix: Click the three dots (...) in Teams > Device Settings > enable "Noise suppression" to High.
3. Teams stuck in an infinite login loop
The authentication token cache has corrupted. You must clear the local AppData.
- Right-click the Teams icon in the system tray (bottom right) and select Quit.
- Press Win + R, type
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams and press Enter.
- Delete everything in this folder. (Note: For the "New Teams" app, type
%localappdata%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe and delete the LocalCache folder).
- Restart Teams. It will prompt you to log in fresh.
4. Screen sharing shows a black screen to others
Hardware acceleration is failing to capture the specific window or monitor.
- Click the three dots (...) next to your profile picture > Settings.
- Under the General tab, check the box that says Disable GPU hardware acceleration.
- Fully quit Teams from the system tray and restart the app.
5. Cannot hear others but PC volume is at 100%
Teams has selected the wrong default audio output (e.g., a dormant monitor).
- While in a meeting, click More > Device settings.
- Look at the Speaker dropdown.
- Change it from the current setting to your actual headset or "Realtek Audio" (laptop speakers).
6. High RAM usage / Teams slows down entire PC
Teams caches a massive amount of data to speed up chat loading, which eats RAM.
- Click Settings > General. Uncheck "Turn on new meeting experience" if you have an older PC.
- Uncheck "Register Teams as the chat app for Office".
- Clear the Teams cache (see Issue #3). Consider using Teams on the web (teams.microsoft.com) if hardware is severely limited.
7. Status is stuck on "Away" or "Offline"
The presence service has desynced with Exchange.
- Click your profile picture in the top right.
- Click your current status and select Reset status.
- If it remains stuck, log out of Teams entirely, wait 10 seconds, and log back in.
8. Missing meetings in the Teams Calendar
Teams sync with the Outlook COM Add-in has stalled.
- Open Outlook, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, manage COM Add-ins and click Go.
- Ensure the "Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office" is checked.
- If active but failing, force quit both Outlook and Teams. Start Outlook first, let it fully load, then start Teams.
Zoom Meetings
9. Screen sharing is lagging or freezing
Zoom attempts to encode your screen in high-definition, which can overload older hardware.
- Open Zoom Settings (gear icon) > Share Screen > Advanced.
- Check the box for Limit your screen share to 10 frames-per-second.
10. Error Code 5003 (Connection Failed)
A firewall or antivirus is actively blocking Zoom's connection to its servers.
- Temporarily disable your third-party antivirus web shield.
- If using a VPN, disconnect the VPN and try rejoining the meeting.
- If on a corporate network, contact IT to whitelist
zoom.us.
11. Virtual Background glitching or hiding your face
Zoom struggles to separate you from your background without proper lighting or a physical green screen.
- Go to Settings > Background & Effects.
- Uncheck I have a green screen (unless you actually have a physical bright green sheet behind you).
- Ensure your room is well-lit; the camera needs contrast to detect your outline.
12. Zoom client crashes immediately upon joining
Your graphics driver is crashing when Zoom requests video rendering.
- Open Zoom Settings > Video > Advanced.
- Change the "Video Rendering Method" from Auto to Direct3D11 or Direct3D9.
- Restart Zoom.
13. Microphone picking up typing and background noise
Zoom's noise suppression is turned off or set too low.
- Go to Settings > Audio.
- Under the "Suppress background noise" section, change the setting from Auto to High.
- Note: This may require a slight increase in CPU usage.
14. "Host has another meeting in progress" error
Your account is logged into a dormant meeting on another device (like a phone or tablet).
- Go to zoom.us in your web browser and log in.
- Scroll to the bottom of your Profile page and click Sign Me Out From All Devices.
- Wait 1 minute, log back into the desktop app, and launch the meeting.
15. Audio is out of sync or sounds robotic
Advanced audio processing is overloading your network or CPU.
- Go to Settings > Audio.
- Scroll down and disable Original Sound for Musicians and High Fidelity Music Mode.
- Ensure your audio drivers are fully updated via Windows Update.
Google Meet & Web Apps
16. "Can't find your camera or microphone" error
The web browser is blocking site permissions.
- Look at the address bar at the top of the browser. Click the small Lock icon or Camera icon with a red X.
- Toggle the switches for Camera and Microphone to Allow.
- Refresh the webpage (F5).
17. Video quality is dropping or robotic voice
Network bandwidth is insufficient for HD transmission.
- In Google Meet, click the three dots (...) > Settings > Video.
- Change the Send resolution and Receive resolution from Auto/720p to Standard definition (360p).
- This will stabilize the audio connection by sacrificing video clarity.
18. Screen share option is completely grayed out
OS-level permissions are blocking the browser (common on macOS), or a company policy is applied.
- macOS: Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording. Toggle your browser (Chrome/Edge) to ON. Restart the browser.
- Windows: Ensure you are not running the browser in an isolated "Sandbox" mode or restricted by Group Policy.
19. Tab crashes entirely during a Google Meet
Hardware acceleration in the browser is causing an "Out of Memory" fault.
- In Chrome/Edge, click the three dots > Settings > search for Hardware Acceleration.
- Toggle Use hardware acceleration when available to OFF.
- Click Relaunch.
20. Cannot hear presentation audio when sharing screen
Browser limitations prevent system audio sharing unless sharing a specific tab.
- When clicking "Present Now", do NOT select "Entire Screen" or "Window".
- Select A Tab (best for video and animation).
- Ensure the checkbox Share tab audio in the bottom corner of the prompt is checked.
Network, Wi-Fi & VPN
Local Connection (Wi-Fi/Ethernet)
1. Connected to Wi-Fi but shows "No Internet"
This often happens when a laptop wakes from hibernation and holds onto a stale connection with the router. Try a standard adapter refresh before escalating to administrator tools.
- Click the Wi-Fi icon in your Windows taskbar.
- Click the main Wi-Fi button to turn the adapter Off.
- Wait 10 full seconds to allow the connection state to clear, then turn it On.
- Click Start, type cmd. Right-click "Command Prompt" and select Run as administrator.
- Type:
ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.
- Type:
netsh winsock reset and press Enter. Restart your PC.
2. Wi-Fi drops randomly throughout the day
Windows is likely turning off the Wi-Fi adapter to save battery, but failing to wake it back up.
- Right-click the Start Menu > Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters. Right-click your Wi-Fi adapter and select Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab.
- Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Click OK.
3. Ethernet shows "Unidentified Network"
The PC is physically connected, but the router refuses to assign it an IP address (DHCP failure).
- Press Win + R, type
ncpa.cpl and hit Enter.
- Right-click your Ethernet adapter > Properties.
- Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
- Ensure both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected.
- If they already are, the router's DHCP pool is exhausted. Restart the physical router on the wall.
4. Internet is extremely slow, but only on this specific PC
Windows "Auto-Tuning" limits the TCP window size, artificially throttling gigabit connections.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Type:
netsh interface tcp show global and look at the "Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level".
- If it says "disabled" or "highlyrestricted", type:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal and press Enter.
5. Error: "Another device on the network is using your IP address"
This is an IP conflict. Two devices have claimed the same local address.
- Open Command Prompt.
- Type:
ipconfig /release and press Enter. (Your internet will drop entirely).
- Type:
ipconfig /renew and press Enter. (Your PC will ask the router for a fresh, uncontested IP address).
6. Wi-Fi adapter completely missing from Network settings
The driver has crashed completely or the hardware switch is disabled.
- Press Win + R, type
ncpa.cpl. If the Wi-Fi icon is grey, right-click and select Enable.
- If it's entirely missing, open Device Manager > Network Adapters.
- Right-click the Wi-Fi adapter, select Uninstall device (Do NOT check the box to delete the driver).
- Click the "Scan for hardware changes" icon at the top. The adapter will reinstall fresh.
7. Network icon stuck on "Airplane Mode" but Wi-Fi is on
The Radio Management Service is hung.
- Press Win, type Services and press Enter.
- Find Radio Management Service.
- Right-click it and select Restart. If it's stopped, select Start.
VPN & Remote Access (RDP)
8. VPN is connected, but cannot access company shared drives
The VPN has connected, but Windows is still trying to route traffic locally.
- Disconnect the VPN.
- Reconnect the VPN, but wait 30 seconds for the DNS suffix to update before opening folders.
- Instead of clicking the mapped drive letter (e.g., Z:), press Win + R and type the direct server path (e.g.,
\\servername\shared).
9. Remote Desktop (RDP) stuck at "Configuring Remote Session"
The RDP client is trying to negotiate a UDP connection but the firewall is blocking it.
- Open Registry Editor as Administrator.
- Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services\Client
- Right-click > New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name it
fClientDisableUDP.

10. VPN connects but drops exactly 2-3 minutes later
This is MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) fragmentation. Your home router is dropping oversized encrypted packets.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Type:
netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces to find your exact VPN connection name.
- Type:
netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "YOUR_VPN_NAME" mtu=1350 store=persistent.
- Reconnect the VPN.
11. VPN Error: Server name did not resolve
Your local internet provider (often public Wi-Fi) is blocking the DNS resolution of the VPN server.
- Contact your IT lead for the raw IP address of the VPN gateway (e.g., 198.51.100.14).
- Edit your VPN connection properties.
- Replace the server address name (e.g., vpn.company.com) with the raw IP address.
12. Remote Desktop connection drops frequently during use
Bitmap caching is failing over a weak connection.
- Open the Remote Desktop Connection app.
- Click Show Options > Experience tab.
- Uncheck Persistent bitmap caching.
- Under the drop-down menu, change "Detect connection quality automatically" to Modem (56 kbps) to force maximum stability over quality.
13. Cannot print to home printer while connected to work VPN
The VPN is configured to route ALL traffic (including local LAN traffic) through the corporate office.
- Open your VPN client settings.
- Look for a setting named Allow Local LAN Access or Split Tunneling. Enable it.
- If using Windows built-in VPN: Go to Adapter Properties > Networking tab > IPv4 Properties > Advanced > Uncheck "Use default gateway on remote network".
14. RDP Error: "An authentication error has occurred. The requested security package does not exist"
CredSSP encryption oracle remediation. Your PC is updated, but the server you are remoting into is dangerously out of date.
- Open Registry Editor as Administrator.
- Navigate to
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\CredSSP\Parameters (Create the keys if they don't exist).
- Create a new DWORD called
AllowEncryptionOracle and set the value to 2.
- Note: This lowers your security to connect to an unpatched server. IT must update the host server immediately.
DNS, Routing & Firewall
15. Websites randomly say "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN"
Your ISP's DNS servers have failed or your browser's socket pool is corrupted.
- In Chrome/Edge address bar, type:
chrome://net-internals/#dns
- Click the Clear host cache button.
- To permanently fix ISP issues, press Win + R, type
ncpa.cpl.
- Right-click your adapter > Properties > IPv4. Set Preferred DNS to
8.8.8.8 and Alternate to 8.8.4.4.
16. "Your connection is not private" (NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID)
Your computer's internal clock is out of sync with the website's security certificate.
- Right-click the Time/Date in the bottom right corner of your Windows taskbar.
- Select Adjust date/time.
- Click the Sync now button under "Synchronize your clock". Refresh the webpage.
17. Network Profile stuck on "Public" restricting file sharing
Windows firewall blocks local printing and file sharing on "Public" networks.
- Click the Start Menu, type PowerShell and run as Administrator.
- Type:
Get-NetConnectionProfile and press Enter. Note the "InterfaceAlias" (e.g., Wi-Fi).
- Type:
Set-NetConnectionProfile -InterfaceAlias "Wi-Fi" -NetworkCategory Private (replace "Wi-Fi" with your alias if different).
18. Specific internal application blocked by Windows Firewall
The firewall is rejecting the app's outbound or inbound port requests.
- Press Win, type Allow an app through Windows Firewall.
- Click Change settings (requires Admin).
- Click Allow another app... at the bottom. Browse to the
.exe of the program.
- Check both the Private and Public boxes for that application. Click OK.
19. IPv6 causing local network slowdowns or timeouts
Older routers struggle to route IPv6 traffic alongside IPv4, causing packet loss.
- Press Win + R, type
ncpa.cpl and hit Enter.
- Right-click your active connection > Properties.
- Scroll down the list and uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
- Click OK. You do not need to restart.
20. Proxy error: "Unable to connect to the proxy server"
Malware or an old VPN client has hardcoded a dead proxy into your internet settings.
- Press Win + R, type
inetcpl.cpl and press Enter.
- Go to the Connections tab. Click LAN settings at the bottom.
- Uncheck "Use a proxy server for your LAN".
- Check Automatically detect settings. Click OK, then OK again.
Hardware, Printers & Peripherals
Printers & Scanners
1. Printer shows "Offline" or document is stuck in queue
Do not click "Print" again, this will stack the queue and crash the spooler. Clear the spooler service manually:
- Click Start, type cmd. Right-click and Run as administrator.
- Type:
net stop spooler and press Enter.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to:
C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS
- Delete all files inside this folder (these are the stuck print jobs).
- Go back to Command Prompt, type:
net start spooler and press Enter.
2. Network printer works for others, but not your PC
Your PC's local printer port is pointing to an old IP address.
- Press Win + R, type
control printers and hit Enter.
- Right-click your printer > Printer properties (Not "Properties").
- Go to the Ports tab. Expand the window so you can read the IP addresses.
- If the checked port says "WSD-..." it is unreliable. Click Add Port > Standard TCP/IP Port > New Port, and type the printer's actual static IP address.
3. Scanner is not detected by Windows Fax and Scan
The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service has stalled.
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc.
- Scroll down to Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Right-click > Restart.
- Also ensure the RPC Endpoint Mapper service is running and set to Automatic.
4. "Spooler SubSystem App has stopped working" error
A corrupt third-party print driver is actively crashing the Windows printing framework.
- Open Registry Editor as Administrator.
- Navigate to
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows x64\Drivers\Version-3 (or Version-4).
- Delete the sub-keys of old or suspicious printer models. Do not delete the "Microsoft" native drivers.
- Restart the Print Spooler service.
5. Network printer repeatedly asks for a username and password
Windows is trying to authenticate to the printer's embedded web server using your PC credentials.
- Open the Start Menu, type Credential Manager.
- Click Windows Credentials.
- Click Add a Windows credential.
- Enter the Printer's IP address, and use "Admin" (or your specific printer admin username) and the printer's password. Save.
6. Printer is outputting blank pages
If ink levels are fine, Windows may be sending raw PCL code instead of rendered data.
- Go to Printer properties > Advanced tab.
- Check the box for Print directly to the printer (bypassing the spooler).
- If that fails, uncheck it, but change the Print Processor (button at bottom) to WinPrint and default data type to RAW.
7. HP Smart or Canon app forces a login to print
Manufacturer bloatware is gatekeeping your local hardware. Bypass the app.
- Uninstall the HP Smart or Canon application completely.
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Click Add device. When it searches, click "The printer that I want isn't listed" to manually add it using the TCP/IP address and a basic Windows driver.
Docking Stations & USB
8. Docking station USBs work, but monitors are blank
The DisplayLink chipset inside the dock has locked up, or the laptop's Thunderbolt port is in sleep mode.
- Hard Reset: Unplug the dock from the laptop. Unplug the dock from the wall power. Wait 30 seconds. Plug wall power back in, then plug into laptop.
- If still failing, press Win + X > Device Manager. Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Look for a warning triangle on "USB Root Hub" or "Thunderbolt Controller". Right click > Disable, then Enable.
9. "USB device not recognized" pops up constantly
A connected device has a frayed wire shorting out, or the USB port's power management is failing.
- Unplug all USB devices. Plug them in one by one until the error triggers to find the culprit.
- If it happens with nothing plugged in, open Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Double-click each "USB Root Hub", go to the Power Management tab, and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
10. External Hard Drive spins up but doesn't show in File Explorer
Windows recognized the drive but failed to mount a drive letter.
- Right-click the Start Menu > select Disk Management.
- Look at the bottom list for a drive with black formatting (Unallocated) or blue formatting with no letter assigned.
- Right-click the block > Change Drive Letter and Paths...
- Click Add, assign a letter (e.g., E:), and click OK.
11. Headphones plugged into a dock have static or buzzing
This is a ground loop interference caused by the laptop charger and dock sharing the same electrical ground.
- Software fix: Press Win + R, type
mmsys.cpl. Double click your headphones > Enhancements tab > Check Disable all enhancements.
- Hardware fix: Plug the headphones directly into the laptop's audio jack, bypassing the dock's DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter).
12. Laptop battery drains while plugged into dock
The dock is negotiating data, but not Power Delivery (PD).
- Ensure the USB-C cable is plugged into the laptop port marked with a small "Lightning Bolt" (Thunderbolt/PD), not a standard USB-C data port.
- Check the dock's power brick. If you are using a 65W charger on a dock that requires a 130W charger to power both the dock and laptop, it will fail to charge.
Input Devices & Biometrics
13. Keyboard is typing the wrong characters (e.g., @ instead of ")
Windows has accidentally switched your keyboard language layout.
- Press Left ALT + Left SHIFT simultaneously. This toggles between installed languages (e.g., US vs UK layout).
- To prevent this permanently: Go to Settings > Time & language > Language & region. Remove the layout you do not use.
14. Bluetooth mouse is stuttering or jumping
Radio interference from USB 3.0 ports or Wi-Fi channel overlap.

18. Webcam light is on, but video is black in all apps
A background application is holding the camera process handle open.
- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Scroll down to "Let desktop apps access your camera" to see exactly which app is currently using it.
- Open Task Manager (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC) and force close that application.
19. Ghost clicking or erratic mouse movements on touchscreen

- Clean the screen with a microfiber cloth.
- If hardware is failing and making the PC unusable, disable the touch layer:

20. Number Pad on right side of keyboard acts as arrow keys

Outlook & Email
1. Emails are stuck in Outbox / Not updating
Outlook has lost its handshake with the Exchange server and failed to reconnect.
- Click the Send / Receive tab at the top of Outlook.
- Click the Work Offline button once to turn it on (it will highlight).
- Wait 5 seconds, then click it again to turn it off. Outlook will force a new connection and say "Trying to connect...".
2. Search bar returns "No results found" for everything
The Windows Search Index has corrupted Outlook's database mapping.
- In Outlook, click File > Options > Search.
- Click Indexing Options... > Advanced.
- Click the Rebuild button. Note: This will take several hours to complete in the background.
3. Outlook crashes immediately on startup
A third-party Add-in (like an antivirus scanner or CRM tool) is crashing the boot sequence.
- Hold the CTRL key and double-click the Outlook icon. A prompt will ask to start in Safe Mode. Click Yes.
- If it opens successfully, click File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, select COM Add-ins and click Go. Uncheck everything and restart normally. Enable them one by one to find the culprit.
4. "The file .ost cannot be opened" / Mailbox corrupted
Your local cache file is damaged. Because it syncs from the cloud, you can safely rebuild it.

6. Shared Calendar is not updating or showing details

- Force close Excel via Task Manager (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC).

- If Excel runs perfectly, go to File > Options > Add-ins to disable faulty integrations (like Adobe PDF makers).
9. Formulas are not calculating automatically

- Click the Formulas tab at the top of the screen.
- Click Calculation Options on the far right.
- Change it from Manual back to Automatic.
10. File is locked for editing by "another user" (or yourself)

- Open File Explorer to the folder containing the locked spreadsheet.

11. "Too many different cell formats" error

14. "Word experienced an error trying to open the file"
The Trust Center is actively blocking a file downloaded from the internet or an email attachment.
- Right-click the problematic file on your computer and select Properties.
- At the very bottom of the General tab, look for a Security warning.
- Check the box that says Unblock. Click Apply, then try opening it again.
15. Embedded video in PowerPoint will not play
The video codec is not native to the PC presenting the slideshow.
- Open the PowerPoint presentation.
- Click File > Info.
- If there are compatibility issues, a button labeled Optimize Media Compatibility will appear. Click it to let PowerPoint convert the video to a universally playable format.
16. Word document formatting is completely garbled
The XML structure of the .docx file is damaged.
- Open Word (do not open the broken document yet).
- Click File > Open > Browse.
- Select the broken document, but do NOT click the Open button.
- Click the small arrow next to the Open button and select Open and Repair.
OneDrive, SharePoint & Licensing
17. "Unlicensed Product" or "Activation Failed" in red bar
The licensing token is expired or conflicting with a personal Microsoft account.
- Open Word, click File > Account. Click Sign Out of all accounts listed. Close Word.
- Open the Start Menu, type Credential Manager > Windows Credentials.

- Reopen Word and Sign In with your business email.
18. OneDrive stuck on "Syncing x files" forever
The sync engine cache is deadlocked. You must force a hard reset of the OneDrive executable.
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset and press Enter.
- The OneDrive cloud icon in the bottom right will disappear. Wait 2 minutes for it to reappear. If it doesn't, open OneDrive from the Start Menu manually.
19. SharePoint synced folder not showing files others have added
The folder mapping has lost its connection to the SharePoint site.
- Click the blue OneDrive cloud icon in your taskbar > Settings (gear icon) > Settings.
- Go to the Account tab.
- Find the broken SharePoint location and click Stop sync.
- Go to your company's SharePoint site in a web browser, navigate to the folder, and click the Sync button at the top to re-establish the connection.
20. "Upload Blocked" error saving to SharePoint/OneDrive
Office Upload Center is conflicting with the OneDrive client.
- Open Word or Excel. Click File > Options > Save.
- Scroll down to the Cache Settings section.
- Click Delete cached files.
- In the OneDrive app settings (gear icon) > Sync and backup > Advanced settings > scroll to "File collaboration", ensure it is turned on to let Office applications sync files.
Browsers & Web Applications
Performance & Crashes
1. Browser is using 100% Memory or freezing
Modern browsers consume significant RAM. If the system is freezing, Hardware Acceleration may be crashing your GPU driver.
- Go to Browser Settings (three dots top right) > Search for "Hardware Acceleration".
- Toggle Use hardware acceleration when available to OFF.
- Click the "Relaunch" button that appears.
2. Error: "Aw, Snap!" or STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION
The browser attempted to access restricted RAM space, often caused by Antivirus injecting code into the browser.
- Rename the browser executable to bypass targeted AV rules: Navigate to
C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application.
- Rename
chrome.exe to chrome_test.exe and double-click it.
- If it works perfectly, your Antivirus needs an exception added for the browser.
3. Specific website endlessly loading or looping
A corrupt local cache file or expired session token for that specific site.
- Do not clear your entire browser history (you will lose all logins).
- Click the Lock icon in the address bar next to the website URL.
- Click Cookies and site data > Manage cookies and site data.
- Click the trash can next to the listed domains, then refresh the page.
4. Downloads blocked: "Virus scan failed" or "Blocked"
Windows Defender or the Attachment Manager is failing to release the temporary file.
- Press Win + R, type
inetcpl.cpl.
- Go to the Security tab > click Internet > click Custom level...
- Scroll to the "Downloads" section. Ensure "File download" is Enable.
- Scroll to "Miscellaneous" > "Launching applications and unsafe files". Set to Prompt.
5. Browser opens automatically to random search engines
A malicious extension or adware has hijacked the search protocol.
- Go to Settings > Search engine > Manage search engines and site search.
- Delete everything except Google/Bing.
- Go to Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults. This disables all extensions without deleting your bookmarks.
6. WebGL is not supported or 3D maps won't load
The browser has blacklisted your graphics card for hardware rendering.
- In the address bar, type:
chrome://flags (or edge://flags).
- Search for Override software rendering list.
- Change it from Default to Enabled. Relaunch the browser.
Security & Certificates
7. "Your connection is not private" (NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID)
Your computer's internal clock is out of sync with the website's security certificate.
- Right-click the Time/Date in the bottom right corner of your Windows taskbar.
- Select Adjust date/time.
- Click the Sync now button under "Synchronize your clock". Refresh the webpage.
8. ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR
Your local SSL state is corrupted, or a proxy/VPN is intercepting the secure handshake.
- Press Win + R, type

- Click Clear SSL state. Click OK and restart the browser.
9. Blocked by HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security)
The site has a broken certificate, but HSTS prevents you from clicking "Proceed anyway".
Tier 2 Override: Only do this for trusted internal company portals.
- Click anywhere on the blank error page (ensure you aren't clicking a link).
- Blindly type the word:
thisisunsafe on your keyboard.
- The browser will immediately bypass the HSTS lock and load the page.
10. Single Sign-On (SSO) or Microsoft Logins loop endlessly
The browser is blocking third-party tracking cookies, which breaks cross-site authentication.
- Go to Browser Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data.
- Ensure it is set to Block third-party cookies in Incognito, NOT "Block all third-party cookies".
- If strict blocking is required by policy, scroll down to "Sites that can always use cookies" and add

11. Password manager won't autofill
The local Login Data database is locked or corrupted.
- Close the browser.
- Press Win + R, type

App Behavior & Integration
12. PDFs open in Edge/Chrome instead of Adobe Acrobat
Windows updates frequently reset the default PDF handler back to the browser.
- Right-click any PDF file on your computer.
- Select Properties.
- Next to "Opens with:", click Change...
- Select Adobe Acrobat and click OK. Apply the properties.
13. Web app notifications won't stop popping up
A website was accidentally granted OS-level notification privileges.
- Go to Browser Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings.
- Click Notifications.
- Under "Allowed to send notifications", find the offending website, click the three dots next to it, and select Block or Remove.
14. Camera/Microphone blocked on a specific web app
Site permissions have been denied at the browser level.
- Look at the address bar. Click the small Lock icon next to the URL.
- Toggle the switches for Camera and Microphone to Allow.
- If they are not listed, click Site settings and change permissions from "Block" to "Allow" in the master list. Refresh the page.
15. Clicking an email link opens the wrong browser
The OS default protocol for HTTP/HTTPS has been hijacked.
- Press Win, type Default apps and hit Enter.
- Scroll down to the Web browser section.
- Click the current browser and change it to your preferred application.
16. Extension keeps crashing or is corrupted
The extension's local data footprint is damaged.
- In the address bar, type:
chrome://extensions (or edge://extensions).
- Locate the crashed extension. If there is a Repair button, click it.
- If not, toggle it Off then On. If it still crashes, click Remove, then reinstall it from the Web Store.
Profiles & Sync
17. "Sync is paused, sign in again" happens every time you close
The browser is set to wipe cookies on exit, which destroys the session token linking your profile to the cloud.
- Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data.
- Uncheck Clear cookies and site data when you close all windows.
- Log in one final time; the session will now persist.
18. Links open in the wrong browser profile
Edge and Chrome struggle to route external links to the correct authenticated profile.
- In Edge Settings, search for Default profile for external links.
- Change it from "Last used profile" to the specific Work profile you require.
19. Browser profile corrupted / won't load
The User Data directory has suffered a critical write failure. You must generate a new profile structure.
- Close the browser entirely.
- Press Win + R, type
%localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data.
- Locate the folder named Default (or Profile 1, Profile 2).
- Rename it to
Default.backup. Open the browser. It will load fresh. Sign in to pull down your bookmarks from the cloud.
20. Bookmarks disappeared suddenly
The primary bookmarks file was overwritten. Restore the automatic backup file.
